Biography

Amishi Kumar is the Carbon Utilization R&D Program Manager in the Office of Clean Coal and Carbon Management at the U.S. Department of Energy- Fossil Energy. The Carbon Utilization program works to develop commercially viable technologies to transform waste CO2 emissions into value-added products ranging from cementitious building materials to synthetic fuels using various conversion pathways such as catalytic systems. Previously, Amishi was a Science and Technology Policy (STP) Fellow in the clean coal office where she gained experience in the carbon capture, utilization, and storage industry as well as a broader understanding of technical, economic and policy-based changes occurring within in the energy grid. Prior to joining the DOE, Amishi was a Program Coordinator at the United States Energy Association (USEA). She earned a M.S. in Geological Sciences and a M.S. in Environmental Sciences at Indiana University; she received her B.A. in Earth and Environmental Sciences at Vanderbilt University. In her free time, Amishi enjoys camping, cooking, yoga, and organizing (sometimes sparsely attended) local trash pick-ups in her neighborhood and Rock Creek Park. She has worked at the National Park Service through the AmeriCorps program at Mount Rainier NP and San Juan National Historic Park.

Midwest Regional Carbon Conversion/Utilization Procurement Grant Workshop

As the U.S. economy moves toward clean energy and a lower carbon future, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking to partner with states, communities, and industries to support the procurement and development of carbon conversion products. These efforts have been enabled by provisions included in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). As part of the BIL, supporting the Administration’s goal to achieve a carbon-free power sector by 2035 and putting the United States on a path to a net-zero economy by 2050, a new initiative was established within DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management through its Carbon Conversion/Utilization Program. The new initiative will establish a demonstration grant program to issue grants to eligible entities to procure commercial and industrial products derived from the conversion of anthropogenic carbon oxides and demonstrate a significant net reduction in life cycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to incumbent technologies, processes, and products. DOE-FECM will establish a demonstration grant program within the Carbon Conversion/Utilization Program to support eligible applicants that procure those commercial and industrial products derived from anthropogenic carbon oxides. Therefore, the Carbon Conversion/Utilization Program, with the assistance of the United States Energy Association (USEA), will conduct a series of workshops (both virtual and in-person) with relevant stakeholders, e.g., product manufacturers, eligible entities, or their representative national organizations (e.g., United States Conference of Mayors, etc.) to solicit input and ideas on challenges and opportunities for a potential grant program.

Columbus, Ohio Regional Carbon Management Applicant Education Workshop

Join the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (DOE-FECM) in Columbus, Ohio for the first of our Regional Carbon Management Applicant Education Workshops. These workshops support implementation of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and will target potential applicants interested in developing commercial-scale storage facilities, point-source CO2 capture demonstration projects, direct air capture hubs, hydrogen production hubs with carbon capture and storage (CCS), carbon utilization, and CO2 transport that will be required by these BIL provisions and support decarbonization.   DOE will address various components of large-scale projects such as capture of CO2 from point sources and the atmosphere; commercial storage and transport of carbon dioxide; developing teams for integrated projects; DOE procurement requirements and processes; NEPA requirements and processes; lessons learned from past demonstration projects; alternate opportunities for carbon management; environmental justice and community engagement requirements; energy jobs; regulatory requirements; and land and pore space access opportunities.   This three week series of in-person, day-long workshops will bring together stakeholders of large-scale Carbon Management-related infrastructure projects. Following Columbus, in-person events will be held in New Orleans, LA on April 19th; and Salt Lake City, UT on April 26th. It should be noted that in gatherings and where social distancing is not possible, the Department encourages wearing a protective mask (N95 or similar).

Briefing: Opportunities in Carbon Utilization- A Vital Pathway for Decarbonization

Please join the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) for the release of a new report,“Carbon Utilization: A Vital and Effective Pathway for Decarbonization,” and a discussion hosted by the United States Energy Association (USEA). The use of carbon captured from power plants and industrial facilities to produce commercial products—also known as carbontech or carbon recycling – is emerging as a vital strategy for decarbonizing the economy. Products as diverse as transportation fuels, building materials, and algae-based animal feeds are proving to be both technically feasible and environmentally valuable, while their developers seek to overcome barriers to commercialization. Carbon-based products are moving quickly into the marketplace and can contribute to greenhouse gas reductions. Quickly scaling these technologies, however, will require supportive policies at all levels of government to drive near-term investment and accelerate deployment in the coming decade. Building on the previous work of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the Global CO2 Initiative, and the Carbon Capture Coalition, the new C2ES report offers a concise description of individual carbontech sectors, discusses each sector’s potential for greenhouse gas reduction, and suggests policy actions to advance the development of carbon utilization. The report’s authors will provide an overview of its findings, highlighting the market potential and contribution of individual technologies to greenhouse gas reduction potential.
