Energy Without Limits: Harnessing the Sun from Space

Revolutionary ideas spurred the creation of this great nation and as we celebrate 250 years* since our founding, USEA is proud to host the Space Frontier Foundation in presenting a revolutionary idea for energy production: Space Solar Power! Capturing solar energy in orbit and beaming it wirelessly to Earth, the technology known as space solar power, offers transformative value to the US energy sector. Our current grid faces rising demand, congestion, and aging infrastructure. While terrestrial renewables are essential, their intermittency requires massive, expensive energy storage overbuilds to maintain reliability. Space solar power helps mitigate these systemic challenges and is a perfect complementary solution to the load growth from electrification and AI data centers.

By harvesting sunlight above the atmosphere, space solar power provides controllable, high-availability capacity that complements nuclear, gas, renewables, and storage, directly addressing the grid reliability challenges we face right now. Because this continuous power is dispatchable directly to the ground almost anywhere, it reduces the need for expensive new transmission infrastructure. Scaling space solar power alongside other energy resources can modernize our grid, boost national energy security, and support a practical path to a zero-emission future.

*USEA is a proud America250 partner. America250 is the national, nonpartisan organization charged by Congress to lead the commemoration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
